So I got an email today from Earth’s Call, a new group dedicated to climate change.
Their kick-off event is tonight, in Aspen. So I’m thinking, “cool. Drive over to Aspen, listen to some music, check out this new group”.
Nope.
Turns out the public wasn’t invited. Instead, the event was limited to a guest list of 1200. Or in other words, uber rich Aspen people. The same people who claim to care about poor people, but won’t let them live in their neighborhoods. The same people who send their kids to private schools, which amounts to defunding public education.
So I tuned in to watch, via streaming. Sure enough, another Aspen celebration of each other. I watched about 10 minutes, which was 9 more minutes than I could stand.
Then I wrote this:
Howdy,
I just watched part of a video in the live stream. The narration was “exploitation of the earth”, “consumerism”, “lack of respect for the earth’s resources”.
Have you been to Aspen? It’s the home of, you guessed it; exploitation of the earth, consumerism, and lack of respect for the earth’s resources. I know, I live nearby.
Having this charade in Aspen is akin to having a fundraiser for cancer at RJ Reynolds’ headquarters.
Then, do you know what goes on in Aspen? Hello. It’s the Aspen Institute, one of your partners. Where do they get their money? From the Koch Brothers. There’s a park in Aspen named after the Koch Brothers.
Your event reminds me of when a traveling carnival rolls into town. You even had a big tent. Inside the tent are game operators, selling tickets to Stand The Bottle.
Shame on you.
That anyone takes you seriously speaks to the state our country and planet is in.
Who’s in the audience? People with 2nd, 3rd, or 5th homes in Starwood and Woody Creek. The very same people who’ve caused the wreckage of Mother Earth. So now what? You’ve invited them to fix the mess they created? Swell.
Is the Rocky Mountain Institute there? They get money from oil and gas. What about folks from Aspen Ski Corp? The Crown Family are one of the biggest shareholders in General Dynamics. You know, the company making the bombs that are killing Syrian children.
I thought I’d seen it all. But this, takes the cake.
You’re worse the Trump. At least Trump admits he’s gaming the system.

I should have known better. My first clue was the copy of their website. They use “climate change”. It’s not climate change – it’s climate crisis.
paulie says
Once I started looking at Earth’s Call I knew it was just another Aspen nothing burger where nothing happens and people show up to celebrate each other.
It’s worse.
Earth’s Call was founded by Michael Fitzpatrick and Spike Buckley.
It turns out Michael was hanging with the Pope. The same Pope who doesn’t believe in contraception, who won’t let women become Priests. Yah. That guy.
Catholic change of tune?
And I think the Catholics give a lot of money to the Republican party – the same party who doesn’t believe in the climate crisis. According to this research, most Catholics voted for Trump. Yah, Trump, that guy who doesn’t believe in…anything to do with saving the planet.
Friend of the planet?
So I guess Micheal wants to save the planet, so long as we all go back to the rhythm method? I wonder how many of Michael’s friends who voted for Trump were at the gig last night?
But the real star of the show was this cat Spike Buckley. Buckley is a super rich commercial real estate developer and investor.
Feeling guilty now about tearing up the planet?
It turns out Buckley has so much money, he’s even willing to pay someone $10k for a lead to a wife. From the Denver Post’s website on 5-12-2011:
###
The cost of love.
Denver businessman Spike Buckley is looking for love, maybe even a wife, and he’s ready to pay for it.
Buckley, 60 and fit, has set up a website, spikebuckley.com, that explains the deal. If you find him an under-50 woman who is very attractive and holds a bachelor’s degree from a noteworthy school and he dates her for a year or marries her within a year, you get $10,000.
###
So Buckley made bank exploiting the earth’s resources in his commercial real estate business. Now, I guess he feels guilty and wants to save the planet from guys like…him? And if he cares so much about the planet, which of course includes all its people, how come he’s so picky about the wife he wants??
Check out their website. Seems like they really want to highlight people of color.
What school did you go to?
I wonder if that kid is going to make it into a “noteworthy school”? If not, will Buckley pay any attention to him? Because according to the copy from Buckley’s personal ad, he seems to prefer people from the best schools.
I tried calling Earth’s Call, but they don’t have a phone number. How apropos. So I sent an email, asking if they’d send me a copy of their financial statements. Seems like their donors would want to know where their money is going, how much money they took in last night, and where it went.
You can’t make this stuff up.
