So I saw Meryl Streep’s speech Sunday night. It would have meant a whole lot more to me if it was juxtaposed against pictures of her and her wealthy friends making a difference in rural and rundown America, in neighborhoods, towns and cities that voted for Trump. Instead, all I saw was yet another Hollywood celeb being sanctimonious.
This goes back to what I wrote about Rich Roll’s pal Suzy Amis Cameron

And it ties into this great piece about identity liberalism
The End of Identity Liberalism
My new favorite expression for Trump comes from Charles Blow, from his piece last weekend. Trump, is a Troglodytic lout. But we’re stuck with him. Trump will be reelected unless we the people take action. Unless people like Meryl, Suzy, and their friends use their immense wealth to make changes and connections in rural and rundown America. I’m not talking about speeches or photo shoots. I’m talking about changes that make a difference in people’s lives. Not rich, white kids’s lives or the lives of those in their bubble. I’m talking about in the lives of Trump voters.
Suzy should dump MUSE and go open a school in the deep South. Meryl could start a women’s center in the Midwest. Both Suzy and Meryl need to be hands on and be there — not just lend their names and influence. Leave the government out, just show up and start building something that helps those in need. And don’t call the press.
Liberals like Meryl and Suzy would also do well to start talking about freedom. Freedom of speech, choice, worship, to be free of fear. Then, demand this for everyone in the world. Because true liberalism is the discussion of all ideas and thoughts. It’s also about being good neighbors to those next door and not. Because as Lilla so well lays out, this is the true foundation of American liberalism.
