Social Media: Destroyer or Creator?
Remember when the popular narrative was “social media created Arab Spring”? We believed it because that’s what was being said on – social media. But it turns out it wasn’t true.
In the world of social media, once something gets a bunch of likes or views, it then becomes how it is. But that’s so wrong and this piece is a great example why.
Social media is about who can pay the most to land at the top of page 1, or gather a bunch of likes and views. It’s not about the truth or even if that something has value. No. It’s a big game of who has the most resources.
Look what’s happened. We’ve judge how valuable true something is based on a Google ranking – in Google, we trust. We need to quit doing this.
Not only that, in this game only those with big dollars for SEO survive.
Because landing and then staying on page 1 is about money and time, or just money. I know it is, because I’m in tech. Page 1 has nothing to do with how valuable something is. It’s about having enough money to get there then stay there.
It’s all so wrong.
