So if you have to know about skiing to get this. The short story is this:
The skis have changed, the boots have changed. But what hasn’t changed, is ski instruction. Skiers are still being taught wedge turns. Ski lessons really aren’t much (any?) different than back in the days of leather boots and wooden skis. Skiers are still being taught movements they’ll have to get rid of if they want to ski well. Don’t believe me? Watch this video:
Not only is Vail teaching wedge turns, they’re teaching skiers to balance on their uphill foot. All, wrong. Skiers are literally lining up and paying, to learn all the wrong skiing movements.
Years ago Harald Harb and I were talking, back when we got along. Harald said, “What’s the worst thing you can buy at a ski area? A ski lesson”. Or maybe it was me that said that? Anyway, Harald was right about…everything.
Ski instruction today blows. It’s the worst. I can’t believe people pay for this. Well, I can – there’s 3 billion Facebook users. The ski industry, just like the food industry, is lying to skiers. Helmets and banana skis have made the sport more dangerous.
Ski instructors will tell you, “Ahh, we don’t teach wedge turns”. Really? It’s right here in this video. Ski lessons at Vail haven’t changed since back when they were pitching Texans to invest in Vail.
What a bunch of hooey. You want to learn to ski well? Find someone who gets what Harald teaches. Call me, I’ll help you and it won’t cost you a penny.
5 companies control just about all we do in life. Our water is being poisoned. Donald Trump is popular. We tweet, but don’t talk. People walk around with their head up their phones. No one went to jail in the housing crash (Psst. Another crash is coming). We have auctions, not elections. We define what’s valuable by likes and views. Nothing is made to last more than 6 months.
And skiers are still being taught wedge turns.
Don’t be the last one to turn out the lights.
