This is the best piece I’ve read in a long time about what we’ve created due to “the cult of likability” as the author so well phrases.
Bret Easton Ellis on Living in the Cult of Likability
The internet is fucked, it’s been burned. We need a new design. You can’t trust what you read, because of Google. Social media, which is a social disease, has turned us all into walking shame machines. Privacy is all but lost. We’re in love with our tech. Texting is better than talking. It’s practically immoral to work for a social media company or their kind. Young engineers and graduates should tell companies like Facebook to fuck off, turn their backs on them and go start meaningful businesses with a 100 year plan, that make products that last. Start companies with customers, not users. Start companies selling products, goods or services that people pay for.
But it starts with us. The only way things will change is if we unplug from social media. Tell the social media companies to take their site and shove it.
Because power is never ceded without demand.
