These guys are doing great work.
I can’t believe people are arguing about education and contraception, but they are. Both are under fire.
If a child doesn’t come to school rested, well fed, and with an attitude of learning, the world’s best teacher won’t make a difference. But that doesn’t mean teachers don’t matter. Of course they do.
I think “Waiting for Superman” goes too far towards blaming teachers (stream it on Netflix here). I don’t think it does enough to point out how important the home is and how important parent participation is. Too many parents just want to drop their kids off and expect the teachers will do it all. This is way off course.
Parents spend way too much time on Facebook, not near enough time at their school or with their kids. My wife volunteers at the school 3 days a week. We’ve really seen the difference in our son’s education. People complain, but they don’t want to volunteer at the school.
We should also come up with a tax break, if one parent stays home. I think we’re too hung up on making money. It’s all about the kids, man.
And let’s quit blaming the teachers for our kids problems. Instead, let’s take a harder look at ourselves, figure out what we could do on our own, to make a difference. You know, “Personal Responsibility”.
